From Student to Tourism Development Coordinator
What led you to be in the tourism industry?
My passions for kapa haka, Māori culture and travelling led me to study a bachelor’s degree in International Tourism Management at AUT. I believe that tourism provides my people with economic independence while improving cultural sustainability.
What is your favourite thing about your job and the tourism industry?
What I love about my job is that I can exercise my creativity and use the power of social media to help contribute to the positive promotion of my culture.
Share one of your best experiences or places you got to visit thanks to your tourism job.
One of my best experiences was supporting the delivery of haka workshops. It was empowering to observe different people of different ethnicities engage with Māoriculture. Contributing towards something bigger than me, that’s what's most rewarding.
What is your advice to someone considering tourism?
If you want to make an impact, this industry can provide several pathways to do so. Not only will you be able to work alongside some great people, you have the ability to exercise your creativity and influence our society to reflect some of your own ideals.
